Working with refugee & migrant young people
Definition
This section looks at young people who are refugees or migrants, and young people who come from refugee and migrant families.
Migrants have chosen and planned to come and live in Australia.
Refugees have not. Refugees have been forced to leave their country because of a fear of physical and mental persecution. Refugees have not had the opportunity to financially and psychologically prepare for life in a new country.

Terminology
Migrants and refugees are often referred to as people of CALD or culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, or people from NESB or Non-English Speaking Background or people who speak a LOTE or Language other than English. All of these terms are acceptable.
We have used the term refugee and migrant young people in this manual. In particular, we have focused on young people who come from a non-English speaking background.
