NSW Youth Conference 2008: Fundraising

There are three basic ways you can raise money through fundraising:

  1. Getting lots of small donations
  2. Getting a few or just one large donation or sponsorship
  3. Sell something, eg. chocolates).

First, work out how much money you need: your conference fee, travel and accommodation costs.

Write a letter or flyer with all the relevant information to give to organisations, businesses or individuals for donations.

This information helps people choose whether to help you, and makes you look organised.

Include:

  • Who you are

  • About the conference (who’s running it, what’s it about, when, where, include theconference web address, or attach the conference brochure.

  • How your attendance at the conference might benefit your community

  • Include a contact number or address. Avoid your own home address or phone number if you can help it. Ask someone like a youth worker or teacher to be the contact person, just for your own safety.

Find a sponsor

See if a local organisation or business can sponsor you:

  • Local council — if they have a Youth Development Officer or Youth Worker, start with them. Otherwise, just try the Community Worker or Community Services section.

  • Community organisations like Lions or Rotary

  • Groups that you already belong to: church youth group, youth centre, Police and Community Youth Club (PCYC)

  • Local businesses in your area, or the Chamber of Commerce.

Lots of small donations

If you want to try to get lots of small donations, the most difficult thing is letting people know you need them. You could distribute flyers out in your local school (both your high school, and any local primary schools), do a letterbox drop or hand out leaflets in a popular public space, like a mall, or train or bus station. (Most public spaces are OK to distribute material, but if your unsure check first).

Local radio stations and newspapers will sometimes run a story on the really great stuff young people get up to.

Selling something

A good place to start is with a company that produces things (like Cadbury’s or Mars chocolates). (There are also a few fundraising specific companies — just do a google search).

Or you could hold a sausage sizzle (at your school, local park or just in a public place — get council permission first though!) Bear in mind that this kind of fundraising requires you to pay money before you make money.
