YAPA media release: 6 September 2006
The peak organisation for young people in NSW has applauded the NSW Government's move to protect young people from Work Choices.
The NSW Minister for Industrial Relations, John Della Bosca today announced that the NSW Government is set to introduce legislation which will require an employer of an employee under 18 years of age to provide employment terms and conditions at least equivalent to applicable New South Wales awards and legislation.
Executive Officer of the Youth Action & Policy Association, Kristy Delaney said "YAPA is delighted that the NSW Government has taken active steps to protect young people from exploitation at work."
"Many young people, parents and community members are rightfully concerned about the impact of Work Choices on young people".
"Young people are vulnerable at work and do not have the work experience or bargaining power to successfully negotiate. This move will provide the protection that they deserve".
"Young people are a valuable part of our community and deserve every support to gain meaningful and rewarding employment. We want young people in NSW to have real jobs with fair pay and fair conditions".
YAPA recently conducted research with over 400 young workers which showed that the majority of young people are not confident to negotiate at work. The majority of young people feel that they would be better off under an award rather than negotiating on an individual basis.
17 year old Joel Clark from the Blue Mountains in NSW was present at the Minister's announcement. Joel said that protections were needed for young people because young people are vulnerable and inexperienced.
Joel said "It is integral that young people are protected in the workplace...it is essential in keeping young people at work and also attracting them into the workforce."
