WYK is a contemporary expression of cultural identity as lived and experienced by young Aboriginal artists in Regional South Eastern Australia - heart of Wiradjuri.
WYK is a group exhibition of innovative art practices developed and curated by Young People.
This exhibition is the first of its kind in this region, local Aboriginal history seen through the eyes of young people.
For thousand of years civilisations have used stories and pictures to record their lives, creating a historical record for future generations.
Creative multimedia practices have provided the KOOL (Koori Outreach Options for Learning) students with a non-traditional means of recording their own stories and images in 2006.
The Project named Wiradjuri Youth Kulture - Our faces, Our places, this is our story has KOOL students talking to the Elders and local Aboriginal people about the old days.
Who are the participants?
- The young artists in the KOOL program: Diane Biggs, Archie Coe, Angela Glass, Jessica Glass, Cyndi Goolagong, Dallas Ingram, Tilema Moli, Frank Murray & Kirsty Slater
- Research Officers - Alice Watts & Maydina Penrith
- Aboriginal Elders and community
- Creative Director - Kristy Brown
- Creative Riverina Youth Team (CRYT)
This exciting event has come about as a result of federal, state and local partnerships and funding - funded by the Regional Arts Fund and Regional Arts NSW and TAFE NSW Riverina Institute - Aboriginal Education and Training Unit. KOOL would like to acknowledge the support of the Griffith Aboriginal Community, the local Aboriginal Education Consultative Group, CRYT, Griffith City Council and Griffith Lead On.
